TROUT FISHING, OPENING DAY
The time you spend preparing for opening day of trout season will pay large dividends when the day comes,
Take an evening and go over your fly reels and fly rods. Make sure you clean and lubricate your fly reels. On most fly reels the drag disc will need to be lubricated. Remove the spool to expose the drag disc and the other moving parts. Oil the drag and the other moving parts and then wipe off all excess oil. Be sure not to over lubricate as excess oil will actually hold dirt. Now invest in a little fly line dressing and use it on your fly line. Fly line will become dry and stiff over the years and a little dressing will keep your line supple for many years. Check your rods from but to the tips insuring that the guides are in good shape and straight. Just one bent guide will have a huge effect on the performance of your rod. A bent guide, with a little patience and attention to detail, can be fixed with needle nose pliers.
Now, make sure you purchase your fly fishing flies before you leave out for opening day trip. I can’t tell you the number of times I stopped at the local fly shop on my way only to find that they had sold out of some of my favorite flies. For opening day be sure to have a nice assortment of trout wet flies and nymph flies. The weather will still be cool and there will be few if any hatches on the water. I do also carry an assortment of dry flies just in case. One last tip, it only takes one warm day for mosquitoes to hatch, so be sure to have a few mosquito dry flies, mosquito wet flies and mosquito nymph flies. Also, If you are planning on fishing some larger streams, ponds or lakes take an assortment of woolly buggers with you.
Good luck, tight lines and clear water.
