I have been fishing before in my past and never really cared for fishing because I’m very impatient. I want to catch something within the first 20 minutes or I’m ready to leave. Brian told me that he wanted me to go fly fishing with him and I reluctantly said that I would. Brian took me to the mountains in North Carolina to go fly fishing. I told him there would be no way that I would be able to fly fish. First of all I didn’t even know how to use a fly rod, he told me that was fine. Brian taught me how to cast a fly rod at our camp site in 10 minutes. Needless to say that made me at least feel better because I kind of knew how to use the equipment. That made me feel better so if someone saw me on the river fly fishing I wouldn’t look like a complete idiot. I still had my reservations about fishing since I had never really cared for fishing before. As soon as we got our gear on and got on the river I loved it. I couldn’t believe that would have ever happened. Being outside in the mountains was beautiful. The thing I really enjoyed about fly fishing was that I was always doing something, whether it was walking up stream trying to not let the trout see me or casting my line where I thought trout might be. I was always doing something, which with the other type of fishing I had done you just cast your line and sit and wait. Needless to say I was not the greatest fly fisherman alive but it was exciting to actually be fly fishing. Brian had taught me in 10 minutes how to use a fly rod and reel and after about 5 minutes on the river I felt like I knew what I was doing. I could cast the fly to almost the exact point of where I was aiming for. I also had a few mishaps where I got my line tangled and I had to fix the mess I made. I enjoyed the whole time I was fly fishing. If someone like me can enjoy fly fishing then I think everyone would enjoy fly fishing.
